Title: Dead Rose Day
Word: zenith
Challenger: Kim Newman
Length: 200 words exactly

Yeah, I got a minute. What do you need?

Market research? Oh, no markets round here, mate. You want to try East London, but they’re a vanishing breed now, and… Oh, wait, hahahaha, I see what you mean. Sure. Ask away.

52. Dustman. Londoner born and bred. Proud of it an’ all.

Happy? Well, dunno about that, but I’m not UNhappy. I mean, I got a job, missus, a couple of kids. Sure money’s tight, but when ain’t it? It’s life, innit?

Politics? Naah… they’re all the same, aren’t they? Immigration? What about it? My mum’s folks came over, and so did my old man’s way back when.

The what? The Zenith of Existence? Oh, the best day I can remember? Oh, gotcher. Me kids bein’ born. Nothing to touch it. Nothing. That moment when you realise that there’s someone new in the room and…

What?

Saddest day?

Sorry. Give me a minute, yeah?

OK, the saddest day – 21st February. The week after. The bins are full of roses. Dying ones. Yeah, when we see the dead flowers being thrown out. And you have to wonder whether anyone wanted to throw them away earlier. And why they didn’t.

Yeah.
